Wild Animal Wednesday! 2010 Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey Volunteers Needed!

Several years ago when I was a Junior in High School I took an Environmental Biology class with an amazing teacher Mr. Norris. He would take the class outside during the Fall months to count the migrating birds of prey in the sky.  It was a really unique experience.  Everyone's eyes were glued to their binoculars hoping to find the first bird of the day!   Every time a hawk was spotted we were instructed to yell out "Hawk Up!".  I am probably drawn to the following topic because of those fond memories.

During the 2009 Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey a total of 80 Bald Eagles were counted across Connecticut.  The Connecticut River (16 counted) and Candlewood Lake (7 counted) seemed to be the hot spots last year.  Each year since 1979, volunteers, the DEP and conservation organizations have helped conduct the survey.  This survey is not a complete census of the Bald Eagles living in Connecticut, but an index of their use of our state- which can be compared year to year.

Volunteers are needed yet again for the 2010 Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey.  The date is January 9, 2010 from 7am-11am.  "Bald eagles migrate south from the northern states during winter to areas of open water where they are able to catch fish, their main food item.  Cold weather conditions, which keep most waterways to the north covered with ice, mean that higher numbers of eagles will be counted in Connecticut." (Connecticut Wildlife Magazine).  If you would like to participate in the survey this year please contact Wildlife Division biologist Julie Victoria by email (julie.victoria@ct.gov) and provide your name and mailing address.

Volunteer for the Bald Eagle Survey and create a unique experience for your memories.  Most importantly- don't forget to yell "Hawk Up!".

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month so ADOPT CEASAR!!

My name is Ceasar. It appears that there was a Roman Emperor a long time ago named Ceasar but I am much more friendly and approachable than that old guy! I have been told that I am a 6 year old, 85 pound Labrador Retriever but quite honestly I feel that age and weight are simply numbers. I will however own up to being a Labrador Retriever since I’ve found that most ladies love a blonde haired, brown eyed guy. Just ask any of the wonderful women at PAWS who have fallen for me!

I came to PAWS on November 2, 2009 when I was very, very ill. My owner at the time didn’t know why I couldn’t hold down food and water and unfortunately he didn’t have the money to take me to the doctor. Thankfully, he got in touch with PAWS and shortly thereafter I was whisked off to the Vet for emergency surgery. Boy was I thankful for that! The Doctor said I had a big rock in my belly that didn’t want to come out on its own and it looks like that rock has given me some scar tissue in my tummy. Because of that, I’ll have to eat a pretty bland diet from now on; but honestly, I’m just so thankful that I have a second chance!

So now I’m at PAWS in a recovery room where I have really nice people to look after me, but I sure would like a cozy home to call my own. Picture me lying beside a fireplace on a fluffy bed or next to your feet keeping your toes warm. Picture my head laying in your lap and my big brown eyes shining up at you. Picture me walking beside you enjoying the fresh air. Picture me being your very best friend.

By all accounts (and I’ll try to remain as modest as I can) I’m a great addition to any family. I’m great with people and kids. I love meeting new animals as well! I am friendly and love to give wet kisses. I’ll even roll over and let you rub my belly for hours (I hear that I may need to lose a little weight but that doesn’t mean you need to cut back on the belly rubs)!

I’m glad you stopped by to read my bio. I hope that maybe you’d even get a chance to meet me and take me home! Please consider me, I’d love you forever!

Wild Animal Wednesday's! This Week- CT Partners in Regional New England Cottontail Initiative

Connecticut is participating in the Regional New England Cottontail Initiative to restore 1200 acres of New England Cottontail habitat.  Connecticut is partnering with the Wildlife Agencies from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and Maine.  Some of the restoration strategy includes activities like reclaiming old field sites, control of non-native plants, and clearing forested areas to encourage regeneration of smaller plants (providing dense thicket) required by the Cottontail.  These activities will also benefit many other local species.  Connecticut is hoping to restore 150 acres of Cottontail habitat on state- owned properties.

According to the New England Cottontail Project Team "The New England cottontail is considered a species of greatest conservation need and it is the only cottontail rabbit native to Connecticut.  It is medium sized with a brown or buff colored coat." A petition to list the Cottontail as threatened or endangered was filed in 2008.  The New England Cottontail Initiative will take place over the next three years.  To read more about this visit the DEP website or check out Connecticut Wildlife Magazine.

Fairfield County CT Dog Parks! Spencer's Run/ Waveny Park - New Canaan

Waveny Park Dog Park in New Canaan also known as Spencer's Run is a great dog park.  It is completely fenced in and the entrance has double doors, so it is very safe especially for those sneaky canines.  The park itself is huge and there is a ton of land.  The fenced in dog area is also very large.  There is bench seating for us humans, and there are a few trees mixed in which provide shade in the spring and summer.  Since dogs are able to roam free off leash in this dog park- it is a must that your dog is well behaved in a social setting.  It is also a must that your pet is up to date on his/her vaccinations.  I definitely reccomend this dog park- its a great place to let your dog run and play!  Spencer's Run at Waveny Park is located at 677 South Avenue,  New Canaan, CT 06840.  Please visit the Spencer's Run website to view the park rules before venturing out.

Norwalk Dog Park- Cranbury Park

Cranbury Park in Norwalk, CT (located at 300 Grumman Ave.) is a great place to take social and active dogs.  "The Dog Orchard" is equivalent to a dog park, except for the fact that it isn't fenced in.  It is far enough away from the road that it isn't too dangerous, but you should only go if your dog comes when called.

It is a popular area for dogs in Norwalk; when the weather is nice there are many dogs to play with.  "The Dog Orchard" is the only place other than the wooded trails where your dog can roam off leash.  It is a beautiful space surrounded by Sugar Maple Trees and Evergreens.  The park provides a doggie water fountain and baggie stations to curb your dog.  There is also plenty of bench seating and pinic benches for people's comforts.  If you are the active type you might consider taking your dog for a hike or jog on their trails- which are beautiful- since the dogs are allowed to be off leash here too.  This park is very pet friendly, and as long as your dog is well behaved, I would highly recommend it.

Beware of Animals Under Your Hood in Cold Weather!

The cold weather is on its way, yuck!  And for those of you with cars out there, you should be careful.  Animals (usually cats) often find the warmth of car engines inviting in the brisk cold and will set up shop under your hood.  A good precaution to take is to tap on the hood of your car in the morning before you get in and start your engine.  This might scare the animal away.

The cold started early this fall and some animals have already begun to seek shelter.  Take a look at this story of a cat getting stuck in a New Yorkers car engine reported by the Daily News and the Gothamist.com

"An orange and white cat had be to extracted by Emergency Service Unit detectives when a SUV driver discovered the feline in the vehicle's front hood.

According to the Daily News, the cat had been in Wilfredo Rodriguez's Nissan Murano for a 2-mile trip between a Bronx building on Marcy Place to a Department of Buildings office on Arthur Avenue: "Rodriguez said that after he parked the car he continued to hear a rattling sound he had noticed during the trip. He investigated and quickly spotted the tabby's bushy tail and front right paw sticking out of the SUV's front end." The building super worried, "I said, 'Oh my God! I killed a cat,'" but was happy when the cat's paw moved.

He called 911, and Detectives Jeffrey King and Kris Cataldo arrived on the scene. They "freed the feline by removing the car's battery and several other parts." Animal Care & Control says the cat seems to be doing fine."

National Feral Cat Day- October 16th

Be a responsible pet owner- spay and neuter your cat!   There are so many cats and kittens reproducing out there, filling up the animal shelters, and there is no need for it.  Today, October 16th,  is National Feral Cat Day.  Spread the word about the importance of spaying and neutering.  Visit Alley Cat Allies for more information on National Feral Cat Day.

If you live in Connecticut and need a low cost spay or neuter option check out the TEAM van.  They do these operations for little money in an effort to control the cat over population in CT.  The TEAM van, a mobile spay/neuter unit for cats only, will spay/neuter and vaccinate for $77 per cat. Call 888-FOR-TEAM (367-8326) for more information.

Monday's Funny Video of the Week! Kitty Shower?!?

If you thought all cats hated water, take a look at this kitty!

Hiking at Mohegan Lake in Fairfield CT

I went for a hike at Lake Mohegan in Fairfield this weekend, and there were so many dogs romping around in the water!!  I took this picture from my camera phone, so I apologize for the quality.  But in the distance you can see a black and white Border Collie having a blast getting his feet wet.  Further down the trail there were dogs swimming together- it was very cute!  The trails of Lake Mohegan are really great for dogs, especially if they are dog friendly and love the water.

Wild Animal Wednesdays! This Week- Bats Vs. White Nose Syndrome

You may have heard that there is a problem affecting the bats of New England, but you may not have heard how big of a problem it actually is.  White Nose Syndrome has killed over 400,000 bats in New England in the past three years.  Bats are so important to us in our ecosystem as they have a huge part in controlling the insect population, especially mosquitos.  Scientists are working hard to find a cure for White Nose Syndrome, before it is too late!  Below is a very interesting and educational video about this syndrome and how it affects the bats in our area.  (photo courtesy of Al Hicks/ NY DEC)

Spotlight on Cats! Meet Tigi, Pixel and Morrison, Our Fabulous Feline Friends!

Meet Tigi, Pixel and Morrison. Three cats from the same family who are boarding with us right now!! These kitties are serious love bugs. All they want is to snuggle and be pet. Tigi, the only female of the group (white with black nose), struck a pose for the camera in true Diva style. Pixel (cream) and Morrison (orange) were a little more camera shy, but I was still able to snap a shot! We love having them with us!!!
