For the 10th Year, Best Friends Angel Tree Helps Shelter Pets
Animal lovers can share their holiday spirit again this year by donating food, toys and treats for homeless dogs and cats through Best Friends Pet Care's 10th Annual Angel Tree campaign. Every Best Friends location is collecting donations to local animal shelters and rescues.
\
Best Friends launched the program ten years ago, inviting clients to purchase and donate toys and treats for the shelter pets. The program has grown each year, providing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of food, toys and pet care products to more than 75 different shelters and rescue organizations across the U.S.
The holiday season can be a difficult time for our animal shelters because donations of food and funds fall off when regular supporters are preoccupied with the holidays. The poor economy over the past two years has made matters even worse for all non-profits, including shelters. The Angel Tree program helps many shelters get through the holiday season.
The Angel Tree is put up in the lobby of each Best Friends Pet Care center during Thanksgiving week each year. It is decorated with paper ornaments providing information about needy dogs and cats being cared for by local shelters and rescues. Pet lovers are invited to select a card from the tree and donate the listed holiday gifts. The company supplements customer donations with large bags of food and other supplies.
In addition, all of the pets featured on the tree are available for adoption - and many have found homes over the years thanks to the program.
Best Friends Norwalk is collecting donations for Bully Breed Rescue, PAWS, and Outreach to PEts In Need. Donations can be made by visiting or calling us at 203 849 1010

"Pet Hotel Chain Offer First-Class Pampering" By: Valarie D'Elia
"Pet Hotel Chain Offer First-Class Pampering" By: Valarie D'Elia
Travelers who are going out of town and need a place to harbor a hound or keep a cat can use a national chain of boarding facilities that truly pampers pets. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.
Traveling for the holidays is troubling enough, without the added worry of where to put your pet.
Best Friends Pet Care, a national chain of boarding facilities with 42 locations in 19 states, has several locations in the New York metropolitan area. Its newest location in Walt Disney World is designed to help customers who take Fifi and Fido along.
"After a day at Magic Kingdom, come by, take their dog out, play in the dog park, take a walk in the woods," says Debra Bennetts of Best Friends Pet Care.
It’s no surprise that the Best Friends Orlando also has the cushiest digs for dogs.
"We have these fabulous VIP suites which are literally as large as some hotel rooms, equipped with flatscreen televisions and all sorts of special extras," says Bennetts. "In fact, each of the VIP suites has a video camera, so you can watch your dog from your computer."
Best Friends also offers cat condos, which are as high as four stories tall, and also welcome “pocket pets” like rabbits. The chain also serves treats that get pets licking their chops. "We have special ice cream treats which are very popular. For kitties, we have tuna on a Ritz [cracker] and cookies and milk," says Bennetts.
For $5 extra, a pet can have a home-cooked feast for the holidays.
"We roast a turkey in the lobby the day before Thanksgiving, and on Thanksgiving Day, if you like, your dog can have a little turkey and some trimmings," says Bennetts.
Perhaps the familiar touch can help alleviate the human guilt of leaving a pet behind.
"It's like dropping off a toddler at daycare. The minute you're out of sight, he's going to be fine," says Bennetts.
The "Stay and Play" package includes overnight boarding and four hours of socializing for an average of $45 a day.
Now here’s a D’Elia’s deal you don’t want to miss at all Best Friends locations in the United States. Your pet’s first night is free and there is no minimum stay. For more information, visit http://manhattan.ny1.com/content/ny1_living/travel/128888/pet-hotel-chain-offer-first-class-pampering

Siberian Husky for adoption!
This exquisite, 5 year old, female Siberian Husky longs for a family to call her very own. Gizmo has had a rough time adjusting to shelter life, as she’s a very sensitive girl. She dreams of being in a home where she can have lots of fun time outside with her humans, running in the yard, lounging in the grass, romping in the snow, etc… Gizmo is looking for an adopter who will take her for walks and spend plenty of time with her. She’s not a solitary type of pooch. Her ideal adopter will be someone who is dog-savvy and who is willing to put in the time, training, and consistency Gizmo will need in order to feel secure and loved in her new home. Gizmo is petite for her breed, weighing in at 35 pounds. She is looking for a home where she will be an only pet, please. If you would like more information about GIZMO please contract PAWS at (203)750-9572! Visit their site to see their other amazing pets!

Wild Animal Wednesday! News for the New York Coast
When people think of New York they often think of the big city, but let's not forget about the New York Seascape. It happens to be a habitat for tons of animals including migratory whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, and over 300 species of fish! Who would have thought? The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has launched the New York Seascape project to pretect these guys. WCS is working with New Yorkers to reconnect them with the rivers and coastline.
So far, they have made progress! According to WCS "A healthy sign of ecological resurgence popped up in the Bronx River this summer, in the form of a buck-toothed, paddle-tailed creature: a beaver. Justin Beaver, as WCS fans named him, is only the second wild beaver to return to New York City in more than 200 years. He joins "José," discovered in 2007 and named for Bronx Congressman José E. Serrano, a tireless advocate for the river's restoration."
